Statement: Denazification did not start in May 1945. Since 1943 the U.S. Intelligence Services were aware of the size of the problem. The prisoner of war camps in America offered a microcosm of German society – with Nazi inmates fighting anti-Nazis and other minorities. Using newly released intelligence sources, one can reconstitute the picture of German society that American interrogators formed during the war and how they came to employ that knowledge to such effect in postwar Germany.
