Konrad SchmidUniversity of Zurich Hebrew Bible Statement: Laws in the ancient Near East were conceptualized as royal laws. The Torah is the first text in the ancient world to develop the notion of divine laws. This project strives to elucidate the intellectual processes that led to the idea of God as lawgiver, drawing comparisons with other ancient Near Eastern legal systems, and to assess the impact of this notion on the historical, social and political contexts in ancient Israel and Judah.
